the educational activities we are coordinating, such as forthcoming
events, seminars, and workshops.
We plan to cover a wide range of courses and seminars on
manufacturing managements in Australia: courses delivered directly by Smartlink,
those delivered by our partner organizations, and important courses delivered by
others.
Please notify
us of any forthcoming courses you think will be relevant.
Smartlink national seminar series
Hearing from world leaders about the latest manufacturing
practices and research findings is one way of keeping up to date with world best
practice, and it opens horizons. The national seminar series will bring the best
of overseas and local speakers to capital cities and regional centres. Many of
the seminars will be available on the web, through the Smartlink management
alert service and website.

Management education through Smartlink
Where a group of network of practising managers can be
established in a region of Australia, Smartlink can provide an extensive program
of management education. Designed in consultation with industry, and refined
over 6 years of operation, the program is targeted at practicing managers.
Subjects are available on-line, and lead to the award of a
graduate certificate in manufacturing management. Smartlink will provide
additional on-the-ground support for groups where 20 from one town, area, or
industry enrol together.
With industry involvement, we can create tailored programs
Seminars and courses aren’t all that Smartlink can provide.
Programs can be developed for industry associations, regional groups throughout
Australia, local networks and individual firms. By working with Smartlink you
can get the benefit of our experience in Australian manufacturing, and our
proven ability to work with managers. Certain programs may be able to benefit
from the Technology Diffusion Program funding which Smartlink has available.
We can develop specific training and education programs,
assess needs, tell you about best practice in production, manufacturing and the
organisation of work. Combining the resources of the Division of Information
Technology, Engineering and the Environment and the Division of Business and
Enterprise, together with those of the collaborating organisations, Smartlink
can bring unprecedented power to the research, training, and development of
Australia’s manufacturing SMEs.
Manufacturing management at the University of South Australia
The University of South Australia provides an invaluable
resource for Smartlink. An example of the university’s commitment to
manufacturing management is the graduate certificate program established in
1996. More than 140 managers have now enrolled in this program. Initially
designed for the automotive industry, this program has been used in a wide
variety of ways: extended to meet a wider manufacturing audience. adopted as an
in-house management development program adapted to provide a specially designed
program for automotive dealers taught in regional locations taught on-line
through the internet, and linked to first line supervisor programs.
The University of South Australia’s strong commitment to
manufacturing is also shown in its strong research profile. It sponsors:
- Centre for Manufacturing Research
- CRC for Intelligent Manufacturing.
- Group for Research in Employment and Workplace Change
- Australian Centre for Automotive Management.
