Aim

To introduce the student to selection, implementation and management of technologies to support the manufacturing strategy and scheduling requirements of the manufacturing sector.

On completion of this subjects students should be able to:

  • identify the technology tools and processes that will support the business objectives of the organisation;
  • plan, schedule, implement and manage the introduction of new technology;
  • use technology for the product development cycle from concept to customer.

Syllabus

Manufacturing strategy and technological opportunity; technology push-pull strategies; technology development; the management process of advanced manufacturing technology (ATM) appraisal and implementation; concurrent engineering, robust technology, new product development and managing a technology-based organisation.

Teaching and Learning Arrangements

This subject will be delivered using the following means:

Tutorials, to give an opportunity for reflection on lecture material and assigned reading.

One day workshops, generally in non-business facets of the subject.

Case Studies and simulations with broad considerations.
