Aim

To provide the philosophies, principles and techniques of total quality management and quality improvement programmes in the manufacturing environment.

Objectives

On completion of this subject the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate a knowledge of the concepts and philosophies of total quality management,
  • design an infrastructure to support and develop quality management programme,
  • implement quality management principles within a manufacturing organisation,
  • use a range of basic statistical tools to control and improve processes.

By undertaking this subject, students will progress in the development of the following qualities:

Syllabus

Problem solving skills, team skills, statistical tools, quality concepts, quality planning, quality philosophies, quality systems and management responsibilities.

Teaching and learning arrangement

This subject will be delivered using a variety of methods including:

  • Lectures, to introduce basic concepts
  • Tutorials, to further the understanding of the lectured materials and to develop problem-solving skills
  • Individual work and group work with case studies to develop life-long learning ability
  • Assignments and seminars on selected topics to further develop communication skills
