Lynn Massey 

Senior Researcher, Lean Enterprise Research Centre (LERC), Cardiff University, Wales, United Kingdom.

Industrial Experience

Lynn worked in the apparel and textiles industry for 13 years in the areas of design, purchasing, manufacturing and sales, becoming design and marketing director for a childrenswear manufacturer.

Academic experience

Lynn’s return to the academic world was as a result of her interest in supply chain management. She carried out her PhD research into apparel and textile supply chain development at Nottingham Trent University. Currently she is a senior research associate at Cardiff Business School at the Lean Enterprise Research Centre.

Research undertaken

In the last 4 years she has worked on lean implementation in various market sectors. Her research includes a wide variety of organisations including:

  • RS Components (Electrocomponents) supply chain development programme, assisting in the implementation a range of activities including supplier development, process mapping, supplier associations and new product introduction.
  • Learn 2 programme, a three year research project, which started in the Spring 2000. The network includes a diverse group of companies. They manufacture contact lenses – Ocular Sciences, petfoods - Pedigree Masterfoods, helicopters – Augustus/Westland transmissions, diagnostic kits - Johnson & Johnson, aluminium foil - Alcan. The network members are all applying the principles of lean thinking and are provided with mentoring and networking opportunities to share in lean practices.  
  • Supply chain champion training on the Accelerate Wales programme - training for the Welsh automotive sector in Supply Chain Management – supplier integration, supplier development and customer service.
  • Spicers, a stationary distribution organisation. The programme looks at the implementation of lean principles to transform a distribution warehouse into a lean distribution system. This programme is at the early stages and 5S has been implemented as a foundation for future lean implementation activities.

Research interests

Product development, supply chain and network development and organizational learning.
