ABIC =
Australian Business Innovation Centre - the new name for
FAME.
ABL = Australian Business
Ltd. A member-based business improvement association, originally the Chamber
of Manufactures of NSW.
ACAM =
Australian
Centre for Automotive Management.
Part of UniSA, based at the City West campus.
AECM = Advanced
Engineering Centre for Manufacturing. A joint venture between the
University of Melbourne and RMIT. Its aim is to encourage closer interaction
between Universities and manufacturing industry.
AIG = Australian
Industry Group. They publish a monthly two-page
Performance of
Manufacturing Index, summarizing the current state of manufacturing in
Australia.
AMC = Advanced Manufacturing Centre.
The AMC addresses the needs of small to medium Enterprise, bridging
the gap between technology providers worldwide and manufacturers in
Australia. It's based at the Australian
Technology Park in Sydney.
AMN = Australian
Microelectronics Network.
The Australian Microelectronics
Network is a membership- based association of microelectronics
engineering professionals whose vision is to grow the Australian
industry by providing affordable access and technical support for a range of
shared microelectronics infrastructure.
AMTIL = Australian
Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited. It promotes the machine tool
industry in particular, and manufacturing technology industry in Australia.
ANTA = Australian
National Training Authority. ANTA is responsible for the development of,
and advice on, national policy, goals and objectives, a national strategy
and Annual National Priorities. ANTA provides advice to State and Federal
Ministers, and is responsible for the administration of national programs
and Commonwealth funding of the National Vocational Education and Training
system
APICS = Australian
Production and Inventory Control Society. Holds monthly meetings, site
visits, and other events.
AQC = Australian Quality Council:

ATA = Alternative
Technology Association. A group that aims to use and promote
environmentally friendly technology. It conducts regular workshops and
courses, and produces a range of educational publications.
Ausindustry = Australian Industry
Group, part of the Commonwealth Government's DITR. Has a
new
Innovation Access Program, which will p rovide
grants to increase access by Australian researchers and firms to global
research and technologies.
Ausmanufacturers: a web site with a directory of
Australian manufacturers.
Austrade:
Australia on
Display service. A web-based way of searching for Australian
manufacturers and products.
Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The umbrella organization for Australia's state-based Chambers of Commerce,
as well as CEDA. Maintains the
Chambernet
website.
Australian Technology
Network
A union between five leading Australian universities, who share a heritage
of working with industry: RMIT
Melbourne), QUT (Brisbane),
UTS (Sydney),
Curtin (Perth), and
UniSA (Adelaide).
Australian Technology
Park.
A technology park at Eveleigh, Sydney, set up by the Universities of New
South Wales, University of Sydney, and UTS. The National Innovation Centre
is based there.
Axseed: a
Winning
Product Workshop, which runs for one day. Organized by
QMI, who also do Proseed Workshops - an
accelerated product development program.
BEC = Business
Enterprise Centre. Around 150 of these exist, across Australia; they aim to
assist small and medium businesses. The
Inner
West BEC in Adelaide is a smartlink partner.
Southaustralia.biz. From the SOuth Australian Department of Trade and
Economic Development: a site designed for SMEs - not specifically for
manufacturers, but has some useful material. There's also the related site
The Business Channel.
Business Entry Point
= a web site set up by the Commonwealth government to give access to
government information and transactions for new and existing businesses.
Business Higher Education
Roundtable (BHERT) is a forum where leaders of
Australia's business and academic communities for improving the interaction
between Australian business and higher education institutions.
CAMR =
Centre for Advanced Manufacturing
Research.
One of the three advanced research centres of the
University of South Australia, based at the Mawson Lakes campus.
It is also the South Australian node of the Co-operative Research Centre for
Intelligent Manufacturing Systems and Technologies (CRC-IMST).
CDE = Centre
for Development of Entrepreneurs. This centre, part of
UniSA, will encourage the birth, survival and growth of new businesses
in South Australia.
CEDA =
Committee for Economic Development of
Australia. An independent, nationwide, internationally oriented
non-profit association of about 900 business, academic and other Trustees.
CEDA's object is to contribute to Australian economic development by
promoting informed public discussion and dispassionate research.
Centre for Industrial and Applicable Mathematics.
Part of UniSA, based at the Mawson Lakes campus. Its
objectives include developing innovative tools designed to promote the use
of state-of-the-art mathematical and statistical techniques by Australian
business and industry.
CIBM. The new
name for the combined SACFM and The Business Centre; a Smartlink partner
organization.
City of Playford. A city in the
northern suburbs of Adelaide, centred on Elizabeth, which has some of
Australia's largest factories - e.g. the GMH car factory.
Clusters
Asia Pacific (CAP) Inc is a network of
organisations with a common interest in developing and sharing knowledge
about industry clusters, and in collaborating with like-minded groups in the
Asia Pacific region and beyond.
CRICC = Centre for Regional Innovation, Community, and
Competitiveness. A newly established research centre at the University of
Ballarat. Its mission is help achieve economic growth and sustainability for
regional Australia.

CRC = Co-operative
Research Centres. This program, funded by the Commonwealth government,
aims to bring together researchers from universities, CSIRO and other
government laboratories, and private industry, with a view to maximizing the
benefits of research through the development of enhanced linkages between
researchers and research users.

CREEDA
(Capital Region Enterprise and Employment Development Association) is a
Canberra-based enterprise development agency focusing on the development of
employment opportunities through small business development.
It operates a network of 3 business incubators (CREDDA Business Centres) in
the ACT.

Engineering Education Australia. Education and training broker for

Engineering Centre.
An online resource centre managed by the Institution of Engineers Australia.
Engineers Australia
= a magazine produced by the Institution of Engineers
Australia. The online version has engineering news, and over 1500
feature articles from this and related magazines, as well as a database of
courses, conferences, and meetings.
FAME

Foundation for Australian Manufacturing Education.
A foundation sponsored and funded by ABL, recently
renamed the Australian Business Innovation Centre. Some people have asked
"What's the difference between Smartlink and FAME?" Here's the answer.
FAPM = Federation of
Automotive Products Manufacturers. An association of 200-plus
manufacturers engaged in the production of a comprehensive range of
automotive products in Australia.
FastTrac = an educational program created by experienced
business owners, and hosted by the South Australian Centre
for Manufacturing.
Ferret.com.au - an
online directory of manufacturing in Australia, with some news articles.
GREWC =
Group for
Research in Employment and Workplace Change. Part of
UniSA, based at the City West campus.
Industry Search Manufacturing Portal: an information hub for the
Australian manufacturing industry including metalworking, electronics,
automation, supply chain, and plant operations.
IWR = Ian Wark
Research Institute. Part of UniSA, based at Mawson
Lakes campus. Carries out fundamental and applied research into minerals and
materials science and technology. It specialises in particle and material
surfaces.
Industryaccess:
Australian Industry Online. An online information resource for Australian
engineers, designers, specifiers, manufacturers, suppliers and users of
industrial plant, equipment, components and systems. Updated weekly.
IRIS = Industrial
Research Institute, Swinburne. Part of the Swinburne University of
Technology in Melbourne, this organisation undertakes applied research and
has close links with industry.
Industrysearch

Institution of Engineers
Australia.
The professional association of Australian engineers. Produces the magazine
Engineers Australia.
ITEK
Pty Ltd = the company which supports the commercialization activities of the
University of South Australia. Based at Innovation House, Mawson Lakes
Campus, Adelaide.
The
Kaizen Institute provides
consulting services on issues related to manufacturing quality and the
principles of kaizen. (Article
on kaizen, in Wikipedia.) The Institute is international (based in
Switzerland) but is listed here because it has an Australian branch.
Learning and Productivity provide
support resources for manufacturers, including publications (books and
handouts), videos, workshops, study tours, learning packages, and CDs.
Learning Network Queensland. A
Queensland government initiative, with a network of over 40 regional centres
throughout Queensland. Formerly known as Queensland Open Learning Network

Learning Australia. The national process

Society of Australia (ManSA). A technical society
of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. Publishes the

MDU = Marketing
Development Unit of the University of South Australia.
Murraylands Regional
Development Board. Its mission is to facilitate business development and
business education, tourism development, economic development and
involvement in labour market programs, in the Murray Lands area of South
Australia.
NAdb = Northern Adelaide Development Board
A regional economic authority, funded by local government, which facilitates
and promotes economic development in the northern Adelaide area.
NIEF = National
Infrastructure and Engineering Forum. The Heavy Engineering and
Infrastructure Action Agenda was established by the Commonwealth Government.
The overriding objective is to increase the level of Australian
participation in major engineering and infrastructure projects

Redcentre's principal objective is networking commercial opportunities in
photonics, optoelectronics, electronics, and microtechnologies. Based at
